Case Study on Huawei and Innovation Attracts Attention
A case study by the School’s Thompson Center for Business Case Studies on the open innovation approach of Huawei, the world´s largest telecommunications equipment manufacturer, led to the first proponent of open innovation, Professor Henry Chesbrough of UC Berkeley, inviting Professor Xu Yan to deliver a keynote speech at the 3rd World Open Innovation Conference (WOIC) held in ESADE Business School of Barcelona last December.
The study spotlights Huawei’s focus on innovation as the key to its success as the largest telecom equipment manufacturer in the world since 2012. In August 2016, Professor Xu presented a paper based on the Huawei case study to the Open and User Innovation Conference at Harvard Business School, where it caught the attention of Professor Chesbrough who created the open innovation theory and coined the term, and this led to the invitation to speak at the WOIC.
