Message from the Director
Welcome to the Thompson Center for Business Case Studies of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) !
Business case studies are commonly used by business schools around the world for almost a century. A business case describes a real-life management situation of an organization.Through exchange of analyses, views and solutions in the featured situation, and projecting oneself as the protagonist who needs to make a decision. Studying cases prepares learners to be leading professionals who face constant challenges and opportunities at the workplace. One reason why the case study method is internationally prevalent is its edge on examining learners’ understanding of theories through lively classroom discussions over traditional chalk-and-talk classes. The learning environment is much more dynamic with discussion among a diversity of students. Case studies are applicable to all student levels from undergraduates to industry practitioners in Executive Education programs.
The existing sources of case studies are, however, conventionally dominated by the West. The HKUST has a vision of addressing an increasing need for quality cases written from Asian perspectives. “The Center for Business Case Studies” of HKUST Business School was established in 2008, to promote quality case writing and research, and teaching. Thanks to the generous donation and support from Dr. James Thompson, GBS, the center was renamed as “Thompson Center for Business Case Studies” in 2012. His generosity promotes the good practice of business case studies at the University, and benefiting other international business schools with our leading impact on Business and Management education in the Asia-Pacific region.
Looking forward, we would continue to strike to live up to our slogan, “Asian Cases for the World” in practice, to enrich the number of quality Asian cases for international users over the world, as well as to lead and to encourage development of world-class business cases through professional training.
Please feel free to explore our website. Here you will find quality Asian cases in our case collection and latest news of case related training activities. You are much welcome to join hands with us on business case development and event organization.
